CANON HISTORY: http://fireemblem.wikia.com/wiki/Frederick
Please note: the player character of Fire Emblem: Awakening is a malleable character, with their name, gender, and appearance decided by the player. For the sake of simplicity, I will be referring to the player character with their default name of Robin and with gender neutral pronouns.
Frederick first appears in the Prologue chapter of Fire Emblem: Awakening. At the start of the game, Frederick is the royal retainer to Emmeryn, Chrom and Lissa. Additionally, he serves as the Lieutenant and Second-in-Command for the Shepherds, the militia group that he started with Chrom and Lissa to protect the people of Ylisse. As Second-in-Command, Frederick created the selection process through which potential new recruits are traditionally put through to become a Shepherd.
Frederick is present when Chrom and Lissa find Robin unconscious on the ground. Chrom and Lissa are quick to offer their aid and support to Robin, however Frederick is instantly suspicious. He finds it hard to believe that a person can wake up with no memories of anything except for Chrom’s name. However, he agrees to accompany them to the nearest town so that the entire situation is rectified.
Upon arriving at the town, they find it under attack by bandits, and Robin joins Frederick, Chrom and Lissa in protecting the town, cementing himself as a trustworthy ally in Chrom’s eyes. Even though Chrom accepts Robin, Frederick is still wary but defers to Chrom’s judgement for the moment.
That night, after a hearty meal of bear (which Frederick does not partake in because he had a rather large lunch and isn’t finding any excuse to avoid eating bear), Chrom and Lissa are attacked by strange new creatures called Risen, who are undead enemy soldiers. Chrom and Lissa are protected by a masked swordsman known as “Marth”. Afterwards, Frederick and Robin join the fray and together, they all make quick work of the enemy Risen. After some travel, they arrive in the capital of Ylisse, Ylisstol, where Robin comes to learn that Chrom and Lissa are the prince and princess of Ylisse.
Robin is introduced to Emmeryn, during which Frederick is quick to point out that Robin’s amnesia claim is still only a claim. However, Emmeryn, like Chrom, is quick to welcome Robin, but she does thank Frederick for his prudence, knowing that Frederick only simply cares for Chrom and Lissa and wants to protect them.
In Chapter 2, using his position of Second-in-Command, Frederick reminds the Shepherds of the strengths and weaknesses each type of weapon faces when used in battle, what each weapon is good or weak against. Later, he reminds Chrom that Robin is only human and can grow exhausted and advises that, at times, perhaps Robin could just let the Shepherds fight as they wish, so long as they know that such tactics could not always lead to victory. (In game, this is meant to inform the player of the Fire Emblem weapons triangle and the auto battle feature.)
After this, they make the long journey north to Regna Ferox, where they are attacked by Feroxi guards. Again, Frederick brings up the fact that is still loath to trust Robin, however he still realizes the tremendous value that Robin has brought to the Shepherds. They defend themselves against the Feroxi guards and then earn the alliance of Regna Ferox. Once done, they return back to Ylisse.
Upon returning home, they find Emmeryn in discussion with the king of Plegia, Gangrel, over the release of Maribelle, a fellow Shepherd. Gangrel and his forces use Maribelle as a pawn to incite a fight at the border and use the opportunity to declare war on Ylisse. After the fight against the Plegian forces, Frederick suggest that they hurry back to Ylisstol and discuss their strategy, as Gangrel must be rallying his forces to attack.
They return back to Ylisstol and find the palace under attack from Plegian forces. After defending Emmeryn from an assassination attempt, Frederick again suggests that she relocate to another palace for the time being to keep her safe.
After an attack by Plegian forces on the way to another palace, they hear that Plegia has crossed the borders with their army. Emmeryn makes the decision to return to the capital, trusting Frederick to protect Chrom and Lissa as he usually does.
Emmeryn is captured by Gangrel and set up to have a public execution. Under the tactics of Robin, the Shepherds plan to rescue her. However, Gangrel has other plans and forces the Shepherds into a difficult choice: sacrifice Emmeryn or give him the Fire Emblem. Not wanting Chrom to lose the sacred treasure, Emmeryn takes the choice into her own hands. She walks off the edge of a cliff to her death and Frederick can only stand with the other Shepherds and watch.
Frederick is broken to have seen this. To him, he’s failed in his duty as a knight by allowing Emmeryn to die. However, Robin’s and Chrom’s words re-invigorate him and he vows to continue on, serving and protecting Chrom and Lissa.
They bring the final fight to Gangrel, where at the battlefield, Frederick informs Chrom of the infighting that’s been occurring in the Plegian army. It seems as though Emmeryn’s sacrifice was not in vain, as her choice to choose her own death inspired many in Plegia to not see the point in the war anymore. Together with the rest of the Shepherds, Frederick fights in the final battle of the Ylisse-Plegia War and puts an end to Gangrel’s tyranny.
Two years of peace pass by, and soon enough, they are wrapped up in another war, this time against the neighboring continent of Valm, under the leadership of Walhart. Frederick still carries on in his duties as a retainer for Chrom and Lissa and Lieutenant for the Shepherds. He fights at Chrom’s side at all times, and by this time, trusts in Robin. Frederick uses his years of experience as a knight often to do what he can to keep the royal family, and his fellow Shepherds, safe and well-prepared for whatever they might face in battle.
They fight the war against Walhart, and eventually defeat him. They return home and come to find that they need to fight against Plegia once more, as Validar, the new king of Plegia, hopes to resurrect the Fell Dragon Grima and bring about the end. Even after Validar controls Robin and has them take the Fire Emblem from Chrom to give to him, it’s evident that by this point Frederick explicitly trusts them, as he encourages them to not give up because Validar has some measure of control over them.
They come to learn that Robin and Grima are one in the same and that the only way to end Grima once and for all would be for Robin to strike the final blow. Unsure how to fight the final fight, they carry on, knowing that they can’t just let Grima rise once more and rain destruction on the land. When Grima attempts to control Robin during the final battle, Frederick, once more, calls out to them and encourages them to keep fighting. They fight against Grima, and in the end, Robin chooses to sacrifice themself and strikes the final blow to bring an end to Grima once and for all. At the end, Frederick remains optimistic that they haven’t seen the end of Robin. He believes in Robin’s strength and says it’s up to them to keep the land safe until their return.
After defeating Grima once and for all, Frederick becomes the new knight captain for Ylisse and he devotes his time to keeping the land safe and training new recruits.
As another note, due to Fire Emblem: Awakening’s support system, it’s possible for Frederick to be married and a father to a child who came back to the past to protect the future by the end of the game. I’ve made no mention of that in the history nor the app in order to make things easier for any potential future appers.
CANON PERSONALITY:
Frederick is a knight whose sworn duty it is to protect the royal family of Ylisse, as it has been his family’s duty for generations. Frederick, himself, takes this rather seriously, placing it above all else. Earning the nickname “Frederick the Wary” from Chrom, Frederick finds it hard to trust new allies at first. While Chrom is more quick to trust new allies, as he sometimes recruits new enemy units in the midst of battle, Frederick himself is the opposite. Every new ally could potentially be an enemy who could endager Chrom or Lissa or Emmeryn. This is not to sat that Frederick will never learn to trust anybody new, they simply just need to prove themselves that they won’t be a danger. To Frederick, it is not only his duty to react to danger, but he must also anticipate it and stop it before it comes perilous.
Yet, Frederick seems to extend his duty as a knight into other aspects of the royal family’s life. It’s remarked upon by others that Frederick acts more like a steward than a knight. He will fetch blankets for Chrom. He will lay out Lissa’s clothes for the next day. He will check on dinner preparations and plan for the next night’s meal. However, Frederick will always insist to everyone that he is not a steward. To Frederick, he is merely performing his duty as a knight, holding true to the spirit of chivalry. According to him, the spirit of chivalry involes maintaining a consideration for others and a willingness to assist anyone in need.
That willingness to assist anyone in need extends past just the royal family, but to anyone who needs it. Frederick will inspect the weapons and armor for the entire army as part of his morning routine. He will provide specialized training to any companion who asks for it. He will even provide protection to someone he does not care for. He’s willing to lend a shoulder to anyone who has some sort of concern, whether it deals with some mental roadblock they’re dealing with when it comes to fighting or whether they are dealing with some sort of personal issue.
But, this willingness to help anybody who needs it has a flaw: there seems to be no limit to it. Frederick performs his duties with such zeal that many are taken aback by it. He will travel ahead of the army and remove any pebble and twig from the path so that no one from the army trips. He will patch every hole in every tent. For Frederick, there is no doing things by half. He either commits himself fully to an endeavor, or he might as well not perform it at all. Frederick is constantly at work, performing some task or duty for the army. He even has no notion of what it means to even relax. Even when it comes to learning how to relax, Frederick requires some sort of structure, as he strikes a deal with Lissa to train and learn how to slack off on alternating days.
Frederick works hard to maintain a calm, composed, and respectful air. It shows even in battle, as he wears a complete suit under all his armor. Frederick addresses everyone properly. He’s even polite to those he distrusts. But don’t take this to mean that he isn’t upfront with his dislike. He lets them know how he truly feels, but just because you don’t like someone doesn’t mean you can’t be polite. His words can be incredibly harsh. Frederick will calmly smile as his words twist a knife in that person’s gut.
Though while normally calm and composed, when exposed to certain stimuli, Frederick loses it all. For instance, Frederick has a… difficult time eating gamey meats, especially bear. When training with Robin on getting him more used to eating wild meats, when surprised with bear jerky, Frederick reacts as though he is about to die. The same could be said in regards to Frederick’s fear of wild animals. He trains with Panne on overcoming the fear, and when she gets closer than a manageable distance in her taguel form, he shouts as though he’s being set upon by a demonic being.
He’s incredibly observant. Hardly any detail will escape his notice. Frederick will take note of what is going on around him at all times. Even when hexed by Tharja so that she’ll be invisible to him, Frederick remains aware that she’s near him and is even able to step in and shield her from an attack from an enemy soldier. However, when it comes to more subjective matters, Frederick is a bit more unobservant. When asked by Olivia what he thinks of her as a woman, he admits that he’s never thought her in such a way. He admits that he’s sure she’s bless with charms, but that they’re lost on him.
All in all, Frederick is a knight who takes his duty seriously. While prone to taking that duty far too seriously, he sees it fit as it employs the spirit of chivalry and helping others. He is prone to overreaction, yet he’ll take it upon himself to do whatever it takes to make things better for the army, whether it be through things he does for them or through ways to better himself.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Frederick serves as the archetypical promoted unit that can be recruited from the beginning in Fire Emblem games. His starting class is Great Knight (a promotion from the Cavalier class), a mounted unit with a large range of mobility with the capability to wield lances, swords and axes. Frederick also has access to the Knight and Wyvern Rider (and their promoted classes) lines, giving him access to a range of skills. Suffice to say, Frederick is an incredibly skilled fighter who can wield multiple types of weapons and also ride mounts into battle.
There’s also something to be said about Frederick’s intelligence, as during a conversation with the character Jakob in a Fire Emblem: Fates DLC chapter, Frederick makes mention that he has created a sort of A/C system for Chrom’s room just to ensure that it remains at the optimal temperature at all times. For a game that more or less takes place in a medeval period, that’s… quite the accomplishment.
He is also the most adept at starting fires (camp fires, mind you).

There is not much when it comes to physical differences between Frederick in Recolle and in canon. Essentially, his body will be less scarred, as Frederick would not have spent time fighting opponents with swords, lances, and axes.
AU HISTORY:
(permission granted from
batsthetic to mention them in the AU history)
Frederick Baudin was born to a moderately well-off family. While they could not exactly be considered “rich”, Frederick had a life where he never needed for anything. Incredibly active as a child, Frederick spent far more time playing and exploring outdoors than indoors. Frederick never saw the appeal to spending time inside, and only did so when the weather did not permit outdoor activities or if he had more pressing work to accomplish.
His parents signed him up for the boy scouts, and it was here that Frederick truly shined. He excelled at nearly every activity his troop participated in. He could set up and take down any campsite and he was the fastest scout at starting campfires. Things seemed to be going great for Frederick. However, when he was around 10 years old, Frederick misread some trail markings and ended up getting lost in a forest while on a scout camping trip. Frederick tried to put to use his knowledge in trying to find his way back to the campsite, but before he make it far, he came across a lone wolf. Startled, the wolf attacked Frederick.
It was Frederick’s screams that drew the search party, already assembled and looking for him, and they were able to save Frederick before much damage could be done. He was hospitalized and treated for his injuries and made a complete recovery. However, his parents immediately pulled him from the scouts, worried about his safety. Frederick himself still loved the outdoors and everything to do with it, however because of the attack he gained a fear of wild animals, so he did not put up much of a fight against his parent’s decision.
Life continued on for Frederick Baudin. He graduated from high school, and almost immediately afterwards, he joined the military. Much like in his youth, Frederick enjoyed the structure of the military and excelled at being a model soldier. Because of his tremendous work ethic and the respect he earned from his fellow soldeirs, Frederick earned several promotions, eventually reaching the rank of Captain.
During his time in the military, Frederick began volunteering a local orphanage in Recolle. In between deployments, Frederick would spend time with the children at the orphanage. He’d play with them and help the workers with whatever work needed to be done there. It was during this time that Frederick first met Gerome, a young, serious boy who kept to himself. Frederick tried his best to pull the boy out of his shell, but it only seemed that he was content to stay withdrawn from the others.
Eventually, Frederick came to a decision. He was honorably discharged from the military and he came back home to Recolle. He put to use his military training and became a fitness trainer for a local gym. While incredibly intense with his training, Frederick was also sought after by many gym members. (Testimonials include: “I felt like I was going to die but dear lord is my body fantastic.” and “I reached my fitness goals even if my body had to hurt in places that I never knew it could hurt”).
Yet, his time as a fitness trainer only served as a transition. Frederick worked as a fitness trainer to support himself as he went through the police academy. His desire for law and order and a profession that would help people made being a police officer a perfect choice for him. Soon enough, Frederick graduated from the police academy and stopped working at the gym as a fitness trainer. Though, Frederick still provides his services as a private trainer. He takes clients upon reccommendation from former clients and “Frederick’s Fanatical Fitness Hours” are still in high demand.
Frederick worked his way through being a police officer, eventually making his way to the horse-- I mean chocobo mounted unit. Once Frederick was secure that he had a high enough income and enough saved to ensure a proper future, he went back to the orphanage and proceeded to adopt Gerome. Sure, he’s a single father with a now teenage son. He knows that this isn’t going to be easy, but Frederick is willing to put in the effort to make it work.
AU PERSONALITY:
There are a lot of similarities between Frederick’s AU and canon histories. As such, there won’t be many big differences between Frederick’s AU and canon personality. The biggest differents are listed below:
Without the long history of serving the Ylissean royal family, Frederick doesn’t have the fanatical devotion to Chrom that he’s known for.
Likewise, without that devotion, Frederick is in general, slightly more laid back. In Recolle, Frederick actually knows how to relax a bit. He’s still a bit of a workaholic, but he knows that he needs to take a break. Sometimes.
Since he doesn’t do as much work as he does in canon, he’s not as well versed in many types of tasks
The mauling he got as a child seriously affected him to the point that he doesn’t head into the forests if he can help it.
Frederick is more capable of separating himself from his duty. When off the beat, he's not still going to act like a cop. That doesn't mean he's going to start stealing or ... gasp, loiter, but he's going to relax more and let himself unwind. Someone's going to have be really blatantly breaking the law to get him to pop into cop mode.
Frederick doesn’t try to maintain a polite and composed exterior at all times. While he still does so on duty, off duty Frederick will say and do what he really thinks. His words will have a lot more bite and he definitely won’t be smiling as he says them.
His knowledge when it comes to fighting is pretty basic. As warfare has drastically changed, there was less emphasis on one-on-one fighting when it came to his basic training. He can handle himself well enough, but he is less skilled. Obviously enough, he’s not trained in handling swords, lances, nor axes, but at least he can throw a decent punch!
Additionally, Frederick is slightly more knowledgeable when it comes to moving troops across a battlefield.
Frederick is still incredibly intelligent. He never attended college, but he never turns down an opportunity to learn. He’s someone who will watch YouTube videos to learn how to fix a broken refrigerator and then watch a video on how to make a bench. Maybe one day he’ll go back to school, but for now he’s fine.
Frederick is far more trusting of people. The only exception may be any potential friends that Gerome may make, but he’s his only son, can you blame him? But even then, he’ll be far quicker to believe that new friends Gerome makes are good people.
He is more observant when it comes to what makes a person attractive. Frederick may not always act on it, but he’s not blind.
